I just went ahead and updated everything, and now it all works. It is a go for using as a community site. I really like the new look of the template that the buddypress people designed, so I am keeping it with the basic for awhile. Although buddypress + mu was very difficult for me at times, I think they have refined it to the point that it will work well from here on out.

I’ve had so much trouble with the forum that I have decided to delete it.

There is a new update for buddypress soon and hope that I can regroup and get forums installed at that point. Kind of disappointed, but  no one really uses the site at this point and I’d hate to keep having trouble  with one of the strong features of having buddypress.

This site uses the wordpress mu/buddypress system, and it has been very quirky about adjusting to upgrades. I was going to say “the devil”… but, ok! Anyway, I had to use the default template which doesn’t look very nice right now. I will work on the styling and the changes will just keep coming until we have something that works AND looks good.

I haven’t tested the forums, and they may have been disturbed by all the upgrading. Hopefully not, but after getting the primary site to work, the forums are next for testing. I sure hope they don’t need as much troubleshooting as the last time I upgraded.

Here is a hint for buddypress upgrades: ALWAYS deactivate all the plugins before upgrades- it isn’t lie the new wordpress which lets you just automatically press little upgrade buttons.

Things were a bit rough when I hastily updated my garden site, ilonasgarden.com to the 2.8 version. Lots of plugin headaches and errors, etc. Most of those worked out, but I have to wait and see if the error that shows up on the admin side when updating “pages” is resolved. Since it doesn’t affect users, I am not as concerned with that. Eventually I think all plugins I need and thmese will update to not cause problems.

The MU was much simpler. I turned off all the plugins and then updated automatically, then turned on the newly updated buddypress plugins. The one glitch was that bbcode showed up in the groups forums here. But copying the new php for the buddy-enable plugin to its place in the bbpress plugin fixed that. All in all, simple and without lots of grief and troubleshooting. I think the improvements to wordpress systems are gradually making things easier overall for the end user ( like me ). There have been some hiccups along the way, so if you need updates to be smooth, make them with a little lagtime, that ways the techies can help iron out everything for the rest of us. Thanks and kudos to all of them!

I am very interested in starting a conversation on the particular demands and purposes of Christian “Godblogging”. It seems to have its own syntax, but no one really spells out the dynamics – except in bits and pieces- and it ends mostly about how we shouldn’t be blogging. That is helpful to an extent, but very incomplete. I think we could discuss it and then start sort of a meme to spread Christ-centered Godblogging etiquette. Anyone want to try this?

I started out creating a group for this endeavor,Christian Blogging. I’d love for people to join it and start discussing their views and experiences.

How is Christian blogging different from the rest of our blogging experience? Do you, as a blogger have a general rule you have set for yourself? What irks you about the way other Christians proceed in their interaction? Have you found yourself irksome, and do you think that is merited ? Do you do things a certain way for a specific effect in generating interest in the gospel ?

Come let us reason together in the way God has invited us to reason together with Him….
Proving reasoning may be a good thing

Anyone can use the groups, and join as a member in order to communicate with other members.  Thinking about whether to use the setup here for garden forum area or whether to place a forum of its own on the garden site.

I like being able to quickly interact with people ( given that I’m online of course!!!).  Might add my lifestream to my blog here. Lifestream is a plugin that collates your twitter, blogging, and other apps into a sidebar list. I have it on a Truegrit widget.  Don’t have time for more than this little blurb. Asked some questions in the forums about the new ‘elle, and suggested a contributor.

This site has been updated. Now, there is an automatic welcome, group membership, and friendship to …moi! The beginning group is to work out getting started and talking about any questions on how things work or how to get a blog, etc.

So glad you are here.  Maybe, with your experience in ning and setting up your own community, you can give advice, insight, opinion on best direction for Elle, etc.

This is an experimental site, so critiquing it does not in any way offend me – compare and contrast with other platforms.

I love your new site… but have no idea what it takes to run something like that and whether it is cost effective for Bonnie.
