This is a community site, and one that centers around Christian values and goals. I hope that you will look around, everything is fairly new. There were some speed bumps at first… getting to know the way some of the new technologies worked, and waiting until the developers had ironed out some of the bugs and difficulties for the rest of us created a slowdown in getting the site working.

Now, we have WordPress and Buddypress geeks to thank for how it is functioning smoothly! All those open source creators have been a real benefit to the web, and webmasters everywhere. Big smooches for them.

I still have registration closed, but you can leave a message and I would love to add you in, if you desire to be part of a Christian online community. We have the usual golden rule in effect, here.

WordPress Evolution

Everything onsite as been updated to the newest version of WP 3.1

I notice that there is something of a different admin bar across the top, which is a feature of the new WP version. The reason to update, even though it sometimes means adjusting things that worked well enough before, is security. The newer versions are supposed to protect the sites and the information from malicious interference.

If things don’t work or if you have a problem working on the site. I hope to get it ready by this summer, so it is active with people sharing together. This is the one project primarily for the use of others than myself. I don’t want to use any part as my “main blog”, just facilitate those with groups or blogs here.

The header will change soon.

I’m so sorry I had to delete the original forums and all its comments. With the new install came a completely new slate for groups and their forums ( each group has a forum for members to talk together and share things.) If you knew how hard I tried to work out the problems you’d be completely understanding ANYWAY, the news is that the forums now work and Buddypress ( which is the plugin platform for this site) is much easier to update and use. I don’t expect anymore problems. I know I said that before, but now the technology backs me up.

You can expect a flurry of trying out templates until the best one is chosen. The most important feature is for all the features of the site to work, be easily accessible, and for people to get connected and enjoy the atmosphere here.

Contact me about setting up a blog here. I will see what I can do, but be aware it is only offered to trusted friends at this time. I don’t have the hosting plan that accommodates anythings more. Be aware that this is Netfirms hosting, and at this time the sites are slow and not altogether dependable. Sorry to say….

Never Mind- Everything is Updated!

I just went ahead and updated everything, and now it all works. It is a go for using as a community site. I really like the new look of the template that the buddypress people designed, so I am keeping it with the basic for awhile. Although buddypress + mu was very difficult for me at times, I think they have refined it to the point that it will work well from here on out.

Forum

I’ve had so much trouble with the forum that I have decided to delete it.

There is a new update for buddypress soon and hope that I can regroup and get forums installed at that point. Kind of disappointed, but no one really uses the site at this point and I’d hate to keep having trouble with one of the strong features of having buddypress.

Looks Weird, but Works

This site uses the wordpress mu/buddypress system, and it has been very quirky about adjusting to upgrades. I was going to say “the devil”… but, ok! Anyway, I had to use the default template which doesn’t look very nice right now. I will work on the styling and the changes will just keep coming until we have something that works AND looks good.

I haven’t tested the forums, and they may have been disturbed by all the upgrading. Hopefully not, but after getting the primary site to work, the forums are next for testing. I sure hope they don’t need as much troubleshooting as the last time I upgraded.

Here is a hint for buddypress upgrades: ALWAYS deactivate all the plugins before upgrades- it isn’t lie the new wordpress which lets you just automatically press little upgrade buttons.

updating to wp 2.8 and wpmu 2.81

Things were a bit rough when I hastily updated my garden site, ilonasgarden.com to the 2.8 version. Lots of plugin headaches and errors, etc. Most of those worked out, but I have to wait and see if the error that shows up on the admin side when updating “pages” is resolved. Since it doesn’t affect users, I am not as concerned with that. Eventually I think all plugins I need and thmese will update to not cause problems.

The MU was much simpler. I turned off all the plugins and then updated automatically, then turned on the newly updated buddypress plugins. The one glitch was that bbcode showed up in the groups forums here. But copying the new php for the buddy-enable plugin to its place in the bbpress plugin fixed that. All in all, simple and without lots of grief and troubleshooting. I think the improvements to wordpress systems are gradually making things easier overall for the end user ( like me ). There have been some hiccups along the way, so if you need updates to be smooth, make them with a little lagtime, that ways the techies can help iron out everything for the rest of us.
